by Veronica Carrillo
British food is known worldwide for it’s class, variety and healthy ingredients. The dishes prepared by British chef’s and housewives are both nutritious and nourishing. For those of you who have yet had the opportunity to experience gourmet at its best, here is my list of the Top Ten British Dishes. Beans on toast. One of the all time great dishes, even if the preparation is a bit tricky and calls for some experience. First the beans have to be Heinz. They must be heated just right – luke warm. For the toast I suggest Wonderbread. To get perfect results it is important to burn the toast only on one side.
Either flavored or unflavored, coffee has a variety of benefits, one of which is waking you up in the morning. Like tea, it is also associated with therapeutic effects that are good for your system. Given this coffee is deemed as essential for some and they can hardly imagine their life without it. Since coffee is a mainstay for society, manufacturers are going wild with their flavoring offerings.
If you are like the average Joe, then chances are you grab a cup of gourmet flavored coffee on your way to work. Many people opt for that convenience even though making your own isn’t difficult at all. The first secret to making a great cup of gourmet flavored coffee is getting the right gourmet flavored beans. High quality beans yield a better flavored cup. Although higher quality beans are more expensive, buying in bulk can save money and nowadays many manufacturers do sell in bulk to the public.
Yorkshire pudding. A real triumph. Made from flour, eggs and milk, the world famous pudding, originating in picturesque Yorkshire, is made up of a sort of batter, baked in the oven generously moistened with gravy. Chef Herman Toad, in 1909, created a more elaborate version of the pie adding nutritious sausages to the gravy and renaming it Toad in a Hole. Black Pudding. Believed to having got its name from the infamous black plague. Black Pudding, sometimes referred to as Blood Pudding, is prepared from dried pigs blood and fat and served at breakfast (I kid you not!).
So, let us segue to tapenades. There are the traditional tapenades made with olives, capers, garlic, and sometimes anchovies. The Los Olivos Cafe from the town of that name in CA, made famous by the movie Sideways, makes a divine tapenade in this style. It is out of this world when spread on bread or crackers. Adding a spoonful of this rich mixture can make any ordinary dish extraordinary. The term tapenade has expanded to cover many other spreads, made with olive oil, herbs and an array of vegetables such as artichokes, red peppers, carrots, eggplant, and so on. Hand to Mouth Edibles is a company in Los Angeles who makes a terrific line of tapenades. Try their Artichoke Ambrosia on a cracker!
Speaking of tapenade and crackers, there is a world of sumptuous snacks that are gluten free. Lundberg makes terrific rice crackers, and for a great corn tortilla chip try Whale Tail Chips. Dip any of these into one of the myriad of salsas made by Santa Barbara Salsa Company in California for a tasty snack or hors d’oeuvre. I’m afraid this has become a meal for me on many occasions. They continue to add tantalizing new flavors. Their Habanero Lime Salsa is a wonderfully smoky salsa that’s not too hot. These are just a few foods that could add some pizzazz to your New Year. So, live it up, try something new, and have a fabulous gourmet 2010! – 19259
